The Importance of Hydration When Training for Martial Arts
Martial art is a form of fighting and exercise that you usually see in action movies. It is something that everyone dreams of being a master of. But when it comes to learning the practice in real life, it isn’t as smooth and effortless as it seems. Though martial arts help you focus your mind and train your body, it is essential to look after your body with the right foods and water. Water and hydration is something that must be practiced with similar enthusiasm as learning the martial arts. In normal circumstances such as hot or dry weather, not having enough water and not hydrating your body can have many life-changing effects. Some of these effects are life long and affect your body health, while others are more erratic and uncomfortable to deal with.
The first rule when practicing martial arts and keeping hydrated is to keep drinking water. No other types of fluids must be consumed. Liquids such as tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, and energy drinks will not help you keep hydrated as they will only provide you with more energy in short bursts. Water will rehydrate your body for the better, and also help you last longer in training. Drinking plenty of water will make sure that you have no complications whatsoever and also make sure that you are recovering from your martial arts training as well.
A common misconception of water when training for any sport or even going to the gym is too much water. Many say a bottle of water is all right, while others say that you must consume a half a bottle in an hour. Either way, the amount of water you drink before and after your martial arts training is essential to the health of your body. When you are participating in martial arts you must drink at least 500 ml an hour before beginning your practice and 250ml of water within the first half an hour after starting your training. This will not only ensure the hydration of your body is at its optimum, but it will also make sure that you can release sweat without risking dehydration.
Drinking before and after your training has shown noticeable results when it comes to hydration, however drinking water during your training session has similar benefits as well. Drinking 250ml of water for every 10 or 20 minutes while you are training can help retain and keep your body hydrated even more. However, this depends entirely on the day’s temperature and the amount that you sweat. If you sweat too much without a steady flow of water to rejuvenate yourself, you may find yourself without certain minerals. Although water is essential when you are exercising and trying out martial arts, it is also essential that you consume foods that are rich in minerals and vitamins. Too much water or using water as a substitute for minerals in the diet can cause hyponatremia or water intoxication.
